About to Be: OUT OF THE OFFICE

As my busy season ramps up I’m about to head out of town for 5 days.  That’s right. At a time when I should be shooting, editing, marketing, and working, I’m heading out of town.

To the Adirondacks to be exact.

Before you sigh and comment on how ridiculous I am being, taking a respite right now, let me explain.

Nearly three years ago, while attending  The Maine Media Workshops (which I highly recommend if you’d like to change your photographic life!),  I met a photographer named Mark McCarty.  I’ll never forget the first day when all the attendees shared their portfolios.  While I was in some very talented and gifted company, Mark’s work simply amazed me.  It was clean and honest and heartfelt and oh so emotional.

I was about to find out why.  As we set about to spend our week in John Goodman’s, “In Search of The Personal” class, I watched Mark work.  He had lugged his large format camera to Maine.  He set it up in a third floor, non-air conditioned, hot, airless studio on campus and set to work.

He lured, cajoled and sometimes threatened (gently of course) anyone he could to get them to sit for him.  And he never stopped working.

Since those who know me know how much I abhor having my picture taken, you know it was an amazing feat that Mark got me in front of his lens.

I watched him study me as he dipped in and out of that heavy black drape, sweat pouring off his face.  And while I cannot say I am “beautiful” in the resulting image, I can say Mark found his way into my soul with the click of his shutter.

And at the end of that week I realized, the photographer who had come to Maine with the most talent and experience, had worked harder than any of us.

Since that time Mark has always been so generous with his advice and information.  I’ve called on him many times for lighting suggestions and most recently for inspiration.

So, to say I was thrilled when Mark called and asked me to help on this year’s Colondar shoot is an understatement!  This project highlights young colo-rectal cancer survivors and is spearheaded by cancer survivor, Molly McMaster.

We have three days of shooting with the models who come from throughout the US. We are hosted by the parents of Molly McMaster on beautiful Lake George in the Adirondacks.

I know this experience will go way beyond photography for me.  I realize these young people have been through a tremendous ordeal. That they are survivors is evident. That they are willing to share their experience with the world, in my opinion, makes them heroes.

Below is Mark’s comment on the project.  I am beyond honored to be involved with this project and to work with this amazing photographer.  I cannot wait to get to work!

Washington Nationals – Pups in the Park!

We were delighted to spend the afternoon last Saturday on assignment for NOVA DOG Magazine while we photographed the wonderful benefit-fundraiser, Pups in the Park at The Nationals Park home of the Washington Nationals baseball team!

This wonderful event allowed dogs in to the game for $5. One hundred percent of the proceeds from each dog ticket went to benefit The Washington Humane Society.

The turnout was spectacular! If you’ve not been to Nationals Park it is a wonderful facility and a perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon.

That dogs got to attend this game was beyond fun. We noticed the dogs had similar reactions to many of their human counterparts…

From the excitement that comes with anticipation of a fun outing…

To the traditional “baseball”  food that is always a must have..

To “cheering” for your favorite team..

With the occasional stretch of ho-hum, boredom…

And the joy of great weather and a great time..

This was really a wonderful event. It was so gratifying to see so many people out with their dogs! The next Pups in the Park is August 29. You can purchase tickets in advance here. Head out to The Nats game and bring your dog!

Otto Gets a Vest!!!

Though I’m still recovering after nearly 10 hours of shooting yesterday, I am very happy to report that our first ever Vest A Dog Photo Fundraiser was a rousing success!!

We got some great images, met some great dogs and most importantly we raised enough money to buy Otto, one of Leesburg’s two police service dogs, a Level II Stab and Bulletproof Vest!  Otto and his partner, Officer Greg Parsons,  stopped by to say hello yesterday and we even got them to step in front of the lens for a couple shots.

We know from recent news reports that Otto was involved in the latest hostage situation here in Leesburg where shots had been fired.  While we hope he won’t come upon another situation like that anytime soon, we’re thrilled to be part of making him safer!

A very huge thanks goes out to the wonderful folks at Dog Day Afternoon in Leesburg who graciously donated their space for the entire day.  Sandy and Shannon always step up to the plate to help out local animals and for that we are grateful!  And another thanks to Katie who not only dropped off adorable “Oakie” for a photo session, but brought a giant box of steaming hot coffee for us to start our day!!

Another giant thank you to Alice & Dave Canham and Nanci Burns, volunteers who stayed the day and did whatever was asked -from rolling used seamless paper, carrying out trash, and I think I even caught them jumping up and down on occasion in an effort to help get a dog’s attention!

I know I’ve mentioned it before but my team rocks! Thanks to Michelle, Brandy & Don for working so hard, not just yesterday, but each day you step out to represent Bev Hollis Photography. I truly could not do this without you!

Lastly, thanks to everyone who took the time to come out and donate to this very worthy cause!  From Sprite’s humans who came all the way from Richmond, to Officer Junkins with the Fairfax Police Department who showed up to show support for the cause.  We are very grateful.  And thanks to all of you for accepting our rather regimented scheduling system without which, we couldn’t have gotten this done!!

We’ll be sure to keep you updated and let you know when Otto gets his vest!

We have a new update that we’re so excited about! A good friend from the West Chicago Police Department has arranged to donate a “cooling vest” to Otto!! The bullet proof vests are heavy and hot. It is recommended that dogs wear a cooling vest to “re-regulate” their body temperatures after a session in the “heavy” vest.  Thanks to our great friends at West Chicago Police!
