We spent an afternoon with Kaj (pronounced Kai) yesterday. A 7 year old flat-coat retriever.¬† Kaj was full of energy and fun!¬† In fact, early into our shoot he decided he could no longer resist the water…

After his brief dunk we headed to the top of the hill¬† for a bit more frolicking before settling in for the “beauty” shots. I hoped the stiff breeze at the top of the hill would dry him off a bit! Kaj did not disappoint as he quickly caught on to the game of pose and run, pose and run…

He finally humored us with a bit of posing and we got some nice shots.  And though we were completely worn out, Kaj was ready to continue.

Though most any hunting dog would rarely tire after a day at the farm РKaj is different. Kaj has been diagnosed with malignant histiocytoma. It has already metastasized to his lungs. He has recently undergone radiation therapy to help ease the pain.  He walks and runs with a very pronounced limp.
But never once through this session did he want to stop! And this my friends is why we have dogs. Besides the obvious love and companionship, dogs like Kaj are here to teach us all many lessons. Lessons of hope and courage and perserverance.
Don’t be sad for Kaj. He does not feel sorry for himself.¬† He is enjoying what time he has left to the fullest.¬† In honor of Kaj, Bev Hollis Photography will make a donation to our friends at 2Dogs2000Miles .¬† A wonderful walk across America to bring awareness to, and raise money for, canine cancer research.
Kaj, we love your spirit. Thanks for touching our hearts.
