Ready, Set, STOP!

We headed out to one of our favorite properties in northern Virginia last week – The Kennels at Stoneleigh.  Set amidst the fields and woods of Virginia’s western Loudoun county, it is a true paradise. And dogs get to stay there!

We were hired to shoot 4 dogs. Two in one family and two as a surprise for a sister.  We started with Riley.  We ended with Riley. While the weather was perfect to begin, the clouds blew in and the light went – just like that.  Normally we add light to sessions when this happens. But with only one assistant, 4 high energy dogs, and no one to hold the light – we had to stop the session.

The dogs are gorgeous, as is the location.  We’re not sure when we can finish this shoot as the dogs go home today and we are booked solid. Hopefully we can figure something out as these 4 dogs together will be grand.

In the meantime – here is Riley!

George and Gracie!

Another beautiful fall day and two gorgeous golden retrievers! Siblings, George and Gracie,  brought their humans, Marilyn and Brian, out for a romp at Tranquility Farm.

Not yet three years old, these two are quintessential Goldens – loving, happy, funny and spirited! They prefer to be near each other and near their humans. While we were told Gracie was the “braver” of the two, George was definitely the “ham” of this dynamic duo..

I love dogs. But I really love the sporting group.  They are just this amazing blend of athleticism and softness with so much tolerance.  Thanks for spending the afternoon with us. Goodnight George. Goodnight Gracie…

Handsome Hound Harley!

We knew Harley had arrived long before he actually entered the studio. Harley, you see, is a hound. A large and loud hound.  We heard the hound “aroo” as his human made the corner into the driveway. And there was Harley, nose in the air, ears flapping out the window and a very large voice.

Harley’s human, Lynn, would of loved to have him photographed outside. Lynn however, understands Harley and all of his “nervous nuances.”  Too timid, she feared, to be comfortable on an outdoor shoot, she opted instead for some lovely head portraits in the studio.

I think she made the right decision. Harley was one of those dogs who was keenly interested in the session – for about 15 minutes! And then he was done. Finished, done, ready to move on.  No interest in squeakers, calls, treats – nothing.  Lucky for us we got some great shots quickly!

I  love this one of him on a lighting check.  I think he’s saying, “Yup, I”m handsome.”  I also love that even the most spirited of dogs seem to know it’s something special and they always hang in there long enough to  give us something to make a beautiful portrait!

Thanks for brightening our day Harley!

Geese Police of Northern Virginia!

I came to know first of the Geese Police when I met Ace as a patient back in 2006. He was suffering from intermittent super high fevers.  When he was good he was great. When he was sick he was very sick.  He’s doing fine now and is the anchor of the Geese Police team.

I got to do a “ride along” this past summer when I was working on an assignment for Nova Dog Magazine.  Watching these dogs work is like watching a beautiful,, orchestrated dance.

So, when Cathy and Tracy, of The Geese Police, contacted me to do a fall holiday photo session I was super excited.  The herding group is just such a joy to watch and photograph.  They are supremely intelligent and eager to work. It was a bit of a challenge, in fact, to keep them “reined” in during the shoot.  They are just always looking to do their job.

In the end though, we had a truly lovely evening shoot and can’t wait to put their holiday cards together.

Ace, Bet, Scat and Rocket – thanks for coming out to Tranquility Farm!

Tiny Chuey Makes a Big Impression at Tranquility Farm!

We finally had our session with Chuey. It was the fourth attempt-  with 3 previous rain-outs earlier in the year.  We had photographed Chuey for our Vest a Dog fundraiser so we were ready for this diminutive dog with the big personality!

To say that Chuey has spirit is an understatement.  He was such a trooper and tolerated some “unique” locations.  It’s always a challenge shooting small dogs outside as they can often get lost in the composition.  Chuey’s striking coat color, set against some of the best fall color of the season helped a lot!

We had such a blast on this shoot. I have to say the best time though was watching Brandy trying to show Chuey that the creek was “water” and that he needed to stay on his chair – I was laughing so hard that I almost tumbled all the way in myself.  Granted I was already IN the creek, I just didn’t want to go all the way in….

Thanks to Chuey and his human Mary for bringing such a sweet bundle of fur to Tranquility Farm!
