And Finally – Sydney

You may remember a few weeks back we started a session at The Kennels at Stoneleigh that was to include four dogs.  Our first attempt yielded a full session with Riley.  Back we went two weeks later and captured, Allie and Mr. Jacks.

Finally, yesterday, we finished what we’d started with Sydney.  Four beautiful dogs. A truly remarkable location.  As we lose the glorious color of fall, another landscape emerges.  Heavy with textures and lines and begging for some black and white work.  We plan to return over the next few weeks and do some portfolio work on this amazing property.

So, here is Sydney – the fourth and final dog of this lovely group of pals.  Two dogs, each belonging to a sister, are much loved and so very well suited to outdoor shooting.

Arleigh & Ophelia

Our barn session with Arleigh & Ophelia was a long time coming.  This session was a gift last Christmas from Sally to her husband Corey.  The original plan was to shoot in their lovely townhome where Arleigh, a 180 lb mastiff and Ophelia, a long-haired Scottish Fold, would be most comfortable.

But, as often happens, life got complicated.  Corey, a consultant with the Navy, was sent back to Afghanistan. This time for 8 months.  The couple also started renovations on their  home.

So, we decided to wait until Corey returned and finally settled on a session in the barn since the house is still a work in progress.  Arleigh’s large size rather limited our use of furniture. It’s hard to imagine that he was 6 pounds when he came home as a puppy. Ophelia, on the other hand, enjoyed various sofas and chairs.  And since this was our first cat in the renovated barn we thought it fitting that a mouse scurried across the floor as Ophelia took her position under the lights.

With pet photography, it truly is always something. Thanks for finally coming out Arleigh and Ophelia!

Frieda & Stoney – Another Holiday Surprise!

We met Frieda & Stoney this week for a secret santa session.  Stoney is a Yorkie. A very tall, 20 lb Yorkie, with papers to prove it.  Don’t tell Stoney he’s a bit large for the breed. He will have none of it. He is a very animated and funny dog and doesn’t seem to be or act 9 1/2.

Frieda is a gorgeous hound mix.  Found by a co-worker on the side of the road as a teeny puppy, Frieda’s human Paulette was asked if she might find Frieda a home. She did.  And six years later Frieda is still at Paulette’s.

You never know how dogs are going to be during a photo session.  The key, I think, is to let things work themselves out.  While we always direct a session to optimize lighting and composition, we also always let the animals show us what makes them comfortable.  For instance, Stoney was happy to perch on any piece of furniture.  Frieda however, preferred the floor. And so it was.

We had such a nice time meeting these two and know their other human will be thrilled to receive such a thoughtful holiday gift.

Babette – A Sad Update – In Memory

Just after posting the last post about Babette and Bella at 5AM this morning, I received a very sad email from Babette’s human, Ginnie.  Babette was so very ill she ended up at the emergency center the evening of our session and was put to sleep.  Though I knew Babette likely didn’t have a lot of time remaining, I had no idea we would meet her on the very day she passed.

Ginnie wrote such a wonderful email about her family member I think I will let her words speak for themselves:

I’ve loved all of my animals so much, but Babette has had a huge impact on my life.  She was so strong and such a leader for all of her 9 pounds.  She ruled the roost for 13 years, and even kept Bella in line.  She loved life, and was so protective of me.  I used to laugh so much when my kids or my husband would talk to me and Babette would start barking at them.  She didn’t want anyone talking to me without going through her.  I remember having her in an obedience class once, and there were dogs there that were dog aggressive, but Babette wanted everybody to be her friend, and never knew she was supposed to be afraid of these dogs, so she would walk right up to them and try to play with them.  They were so taken aback that they played with her, and after each class their owners would come up to me and ask if their dog could play with Babette for a little bit before we left.  She was also a glutton, always looking for food to steal.  Because of this we always kept Bella’s food bowl elevated, but Babette would stand on her hind legs, turn to the side and stretch her neck over to reach the food.  We could always tell when she had a mouthful and shout “Babette!” and she would open her mouth and kibble would come tumbling out. She was like a bulldozer.  I’m going to miss her so much.  She was my little cuddle bug.

What a wonderful tribute to such a tiny little spirit. Our deepest sympathy to Babette’s family. We hope you find comfort in her images.
