Hagen & Pearl: Wiemaraners Take the Heat!

After our blast of unprecedented snows this winter, we’ve followed up with a strange spring as well. First rain, then unseasonably cold, and this week temperatures topping 95°.

Though it wasn’t the hottest day of the week when we met up with Hagen & Pearl, it ran a close second.  These two lovely Wiemaraners came to Tranquility Farm from Charlottesville, VA and since the ride was nearly 2 hours I wanted to be sure we could get this session in.

Though fairly fit for their age, Pearl is 7 and Hagen is 9, Hagen suffers from several health issues that I was very aware of on this sweltering day.

So we started gently.

Close to the barn.

In the shade.

We even took a break and went back into the air conditioning before we started the second segment of shooting.

The dogs held up remarkably well and tolerated most of our requests with a happy wag of their stubby tails.

This session was particularly important. Not just with Hagen’s failing health, but also because over a year ago the dog’s human, Michelle had paid for another photo session with a different pet photographer, and has yet to receive her paid for images.  I am appalled at this behavior from a fellow photographer. Not only because of the lack of business ethics but because a year in a dog’s life, especially one in failing health, is a long time. That period in time cannot be repeated.  The looks captured then cannot be duplicated.  Michelle made the effort to document her family members and she deserves those images.

But enough of that soap box.  We cannot fix her last experience but hopefully we can be sure she is thrilled with the experience she had with us!

We were glad  that she decided to try again. We are honored that she trusted us with her beloved family members.

Thanks for coming out to the farm Hagen & Pearl and hopefully we’ll see you back for a fall session!

Shhhh! Surprise Session: Gromit & Marcus!

We had a spectacular late spring evening at the farm last night. And we slipped this in just under the wire!  We were contacted several weeks ago about doing a session with Gromit and his boy Marcus. It was to be a surprise birthday gift for Marcus’ mom, Karla.

As luck would have it, it poured rain on our original date and we re-scheduled for last  night – with nary any room to spare as today is Karla’s birthday!

This time the weather cooperated and so did Gromit!

Gromit is a 1 1/2 year old Corgi, chosen by Marcus, as a pup.  He is a delightful dog and he introduced us to his equally delightful and polite boy, Marcus.  They drove all the way  from D.C. to create this special gift.

While it’s always rewarding to see the bond between humans and dogs, it’s particularly so between a boy and his dog.

It was a fun-filled evening filled with laughter and antics. This post has a few more images than usual since it’s all we’ll have ready for Karla’s birthday.

So, happy birthday Karla. We had a blast with  your family!

To get images  like this…..

…we saw a lot of this….

Bichon: Lily at Tranquility Barn!

We finally met dear Ms. Lily this weekend at the barn. Lily had been on our books for quite some time but her human, Christine, had several issues that prevented her from keeping her appointment.

We were anxious to get Lily’s session in as she had been diagnosed with Cushing’s disease and some days are much better than others for her.

Having worked with Cushings dogs in my career I was really prepared for a rotund dog with bad skin.  I was so happily surprised!

Lily, at age 10, still looks like a puppy.  She is bright, energetic and a bundle of personality. She took particular delight in having Brandy chase her about the barn between shots and thought it was a wonderful game…

We’re so glad you finally made it out to the farm Lily. It was a lovely session!

Kelso on The Farm!

To say we had a spectacular afternoon for Kelso’s session is truly an understatement. One of those rare Virginia days – 75° with low humidity and crystal clear skies.

Kelso’s session was a gift, given last winter when the skies were grey and the snow so deep a session wasn’t possible.

He came to the farm to play. And play he did. We spent a lot of time tossing his “chuck-it” about. However, as always, we worked to find some lovely light and convinced this spirited dog to take a break and strike a few poses.

Kelso was rescued from a shelter as an adult dog.  He is extremely lucky.  When his humans, Lars and Amy found him online they were struck by his handsome looks.

They went to the shelter already determined to adopted not “A” dog but “this” dog.  However, once there they found Kelso extremely agitated, and attacking his cage and barking non-stop.  With concerns about his personality they began to think perhaps another dog would be a better fit.

Fate intervened in the form of a very observant shelter worker. Seems he had been handling Kelso out of his cage and this worker knew Kelso was a completely different dog outside of the shelter.

He convinced Amy and Lars to give him a chance.  And so, Kelso found his forever home.

We had a truly lovely afternoon. Thanks for sharing your lovely family member with us Lars and Amy!

Jamus Does Reston Town Center (Antropologie Too!)

Though the skies were dark and threatening rain, we spent an evening at The Reston Town Center with the adorable Jamus on Thursday. Jamus belongs to Ashen Keilyn the enormously talented singer songwriter of  SCOUT.  I met Ashen last summer when we photographed her in New York for her band’s website.

To say that Jamus is a bundle of adorable is a bit of an understatement.

I thought he fit perfectly amongst the European like feel of Reston.  When you’re as adorable as Jamus, even the folks at Anthropologie let you stroll about their store and take a few images. (SIDE NOTE: Do not photograph in Anthropologie and hope to keep your 30 year old assistant working. We had to search for Nicola amongst the racks of beautiful things on a few occasions)….

After wandering through Anthropolgie,  we headed back outdoors and strolled amongst the wonderful doorways, stone, wires and bricks that make up this lovely place.

And finally, with what seems to be a Bev Hollis Photography signature move, we got the police involved again after I plopped myself down on my stomach in the middle of an intersection to get this shot… We promise to do better…

Thanks Jamus – we had a great time!
