Pitch & Duke – Home Study

It’s been over a year since we met Pitch and Duke. Their humans, John and Maynil, had scheduled a shoot late last season.  Too late as a matter of fact. As soon as we had them on the books the winds took the leaves, the rains came and we decided to postpone.  Now, a full year later we were almost shut out again. Two days of rain, blustery winds – it wasn’t looking good.  But, early afternoon, the skies cleared, the last of the leaves hung on, and we finally had our session with these two boys!

Pitch, a 12 1/2 year old black lab who doesn’t look a day over 6, and Duke, an 8 year old yellow lab who hasn’t met a camera he doesn’t  like, gleefully showed us about their “property.”  And what a beautiful property they have!  Wooded trails, open grassy play areas and all of it fenced just for them!  These two are quite a pair.

Pitch really preferred to roam about and could take or leave the camera. Duke, on the other hand, was striking poses even during lens changes!  They are just a delight, these two boys. Fast friends and devoted to their humans.  And very, very, very, BALL oriented!!  Even at 12 1/2, Pitch can outrun Duke on most ball chases.  It was a joy to watch the spirit of these guys.  Thanks for having us out to your gorgeous property Pitch and Duke!

Chevy & Tucker – Black Labs Romp the Farm!

We had a Sunday evening session with the McClintock family from Reston.  The whole family came along and we grabbed a few family shots as well. The dogs, of course, were our main subject and what a pair!

Chevy is the older of these two boys.  A flunk-out from the Guide Dog for the Blind program, he found his forever home with the McClintocks.  I think he is a rather brilliant dog – thus the reason for not “making it” in guide dog school.  I think Chevy realized early on that there was a cushier life to be led and he decided to “underperform.”

His partner in crime is young Tucker.  At five months and growing, Tucker is, as you would expect, a bundle of energy.  Full of spunk and a bit mischievous too, Tucker idolizes his big brother Chevy. (Notice Tucker’s slightly swollen left eye in the photo above – a run-in with a biting insect!)

We had our hands full with these two. Especially Tucker.  He had a sly look in his eye as he ran off with our treat bag! Later, when no one was watching, he snatched up a pair of lovely prescripton sunglasses and bolted across the field.  I think Chevy has filled out an application to try to get Tucker into Guide Dog School!

I know these two will be fast friends. Tucker & Chevy are lucky to have each other!

Brodie – Black Lab comes to Tranquility Farm!

Though he spent the afternoon at Tranquility Farm, Brodie was far from tranquil!  Brodie is one of those dogs who never really likes to stand still. On the other hand, he likes to hang next to people while not standing still… Which makes for, how should I say this, a challenging photo shoot!

When I say he likes to move, I don’t mean in the “Hurry up and throw the ball” sort of way. More like “I’m really here to do my own thing so try to catch me with that shutter..”

An absolutely beautiful dog, Brodie was rescued 6 years ago at the age of 1, by his forever human Carlie.  Carlie told us that she worked with Brodie in a Canine Good Citizen class but apparently Brodie has some, how would you say, “focus issues” and his instructors politely suggested some “remedial” training:}

Training frustrations aside, Brodie really is magnificent.  He has this two-tone fur – black one minute, brown when the sun hits it just so…

We enjoyed our evening with this gentle soul. Thunderstorms rumbled in the background for a good part of our session. Brodie didn’t seem to have a care in the world…
