Riley Walks the Big Log!

Anyone who has worked with us, or attended an Unleashed workshop, has had the pleasure of meeting one of my assistants – most likely Brandy.  She works tirelessly for me and usually with only a minimal amount of complaining and eye-rolling (particularly when it comes to moving furniture into the fields and streams).

Brandy works wonderfully with dogs and is able to grasp quickly what makes each subject tick.

When I started shooting at the farm, three seasons ago, I noticed this giant tree that spanned the creek. Each time I’d glance at it I’d remark, “I sure would like to get a dog out on that log.”

Enter Riley.

Riley is Brandy’s Piebald Mini-Dachshund. He has been doing agility for almost three years.

When Brandy decided the tree would be no match for Riley and his skills she set out to get him to “walk the log.”

So Sunday, after our morning shoot, we donned our wellies, crawled into the creek, (well at least I did) and Brandy worked Riley on the log.

He performed beautifully. Actually I think the log is about twice as wide as his normal agility ramp. But to this little dog he must have seemed 1000 feet in the air!

Nice job Riley. And it’s always good to take a few minutes and shoot some things just for fun!

I loved watching Brandy try to balance too!

Maddie & Finley – Labs On The Farm!

We finally had our session with Maddie and Finley this past weekend. We started this effort last fall towards the end of our shooting season. When the weather wouldn’t cooperate we pushed it to spring. And then, it rained and we rescheduled again.  This weekend it was finally to be.

We met the girls and their humans early, early at the farm.  Though the skies never did give us some brighter light for our fast moving play shots, we did enjoy that wonderful diffuse glow that cloud cover brings.

These two girls are labs to the core! Full of energy, both age 4, Maddie is a chocolate and Finley a gorgeous silver. Truly delightful dogs.

Maddie, the “shy” one preferred to watch Finley be photographed. However, with time and treats and special attention from Brandy, soon she was right in the mix of things and seemed to enjoy her camera time!

Finley was game for anything as long as treats were forthcoming.  So when the skies got a bit dramatic she knew just what to do…

We had a truly delightful, though early, morning with these girls. Sporting breeds and the farm just go so well together.

Thanks to Bill and Susan for sticking with us through all those reschedules!

Snow

It’s been an unusual winter for us here in northern Virginia.  This is my fourth winter here.  And though it’s only the start of February, we have had more snowfall since December than in my past three winters combined.

I’m not much of a winter person. I like warmth. The older I get the more my joints really appreciate those balmy temperatures! Plus, I’m a runner. I’m a runner who prefers running outdoors to a treadmill – a  million times over.  This snow cramps my style.

That said, there is sometimes such beauty in this white stuff.  It is so breathtaking at times that even I, hater of cold, am lured out into its wonder.  With my camera of course…

So, though it’s only the start of February and the luscious warmth of spring seems so very far away, I’ll stop for a moment and enjoy the beauty of winter.
