Sara: A Mini-Farm Session Moves Into The Studio

We tolerated the sweltering heat with Ari and Abby on Saturday. But Sunday turned out even hotter and more humid.  Since our subject was nearing 10 years of age we all decided that we would shoot indoors and do an “abbreviated” session outdoors.

We made a wise choice as the 97° temps, coupled with the extreme humidity, made the outdoors fit for neither “man nor beast.”

Sara may well be the gentlest and sweetest dog I’ve ever met.  Truly.

Happy, full of tail wags, and extremely good-natured, she did anything we asked of her.

This is particularly surprising given her background. Sara was adopted by her forever family at the age of 5. Prior to that, while not abused, she was rather neglected. She was tethered in the backyard with scant attention from her people.

So often dogs that experience that type of life are skittish and wary of people, especially strangers.

Not Sara! She was truly delightful. She came with her own entourage – her humans and her girl, Jenna.

While Sara’s human Stephanie made it clear that this session was about Sara, we did grab a few of Jenna with Sara. (It was difficult to get Jenna indoors as she was enamored by the goat and horses in the barnyard!)

We had a lovely afternoon and feel lucky to have met his wonderful family!

Jamus Does Reston Town Center (Antropologie Too!)

Though the skies were dark and threatening rain, we spent an evening at The Reston Town Center with the adorable Jamus on Thursday. Jamus belongs to Ashen Keilyn the enormously talented singer songwriter of  SCOUT.  I met Ashen last summer when we photographed her in New York for her band’s website.

To say that Jamus is a bundle of adorable is a bit of an understatement.

I thought he fit perfectly amongst the European like feel of Reston.  When you’re as adorable as Jamus, even the folks at Anthropologie let you stroll about their store and take a few images. (SIDE NOTE: Do not photograph in Anthropologie and hope to keep your 30 year old assistant working. We had to search for Nicola amongst the racks of beautiful things on a few occasions)….

After wandering through Anthropolgie,  we headed back outdoors and strolled amongst the wonderful doorways, stone, wires and bricks that make up this lovely place.

And finally, with what seems to be a Bev Hollis Photography signature move, we got the police involved again after I plopped myself down on my stomach in the middle of an intersection to get this shot… We promise to do better…

Thanks Jamus – we had a great time!

Breaux Vineyard Dogs!

We spent a lovely spring afternoon wandering the grounds of beautiful Breaux Vineyard. Set amongst the rolling foothills of Western Loudoun county’s Short Hill mountain, the 404 acre estate is breathtakingly beautiful.

Extremely dog friendly, it is the perfect destination if you’re looking to spend an afternoon sipping delicious wines and gazing at the spectacular scenery with your canine companion.

We were there for a session with the two vineyard dogs, Skipper and Cooper.  We were shooting specifically to add some dog/vineyard work to the Breaux Tasting Room. While the property is amazing – lest not forget the dogs!

Skipper, 13 years young is a Schipperke – Chow cross.  It is clear she takes her job seriously as she surveys the property while ambling about.  She prefers, I think, to spend a lot of time as well in Jen Breaux’s office, as an office assistant of course!

And then there is Cooper. Young, hilarious, Cooper.  Jen described Cooper as the dog version of Kramer from Seinfeld. There could not be a more apt description.  Cooper approaches everything with great enthusiasm and optimism.  And his body always seems just a beat behind his intentions.  It was a delight to watch his zestful approach to life.

Extremely well trained, once he figured out what we were up to he was the consummate host and model..

So, while Skipper trailed behind us, ever watchful, happy to be within range but a bit out of range…

Cooper flung open the doors and showed us his “place…”

And a lovely place it is!  Thanks to The Breaux’s for having us out. If you’ve never been, be sure to mark your calendar for May 15th and the Breaux Dog Day Event. Bev Hollis Photography will have a booth again this year and it is one of our favorites of the season.

We left with a lovely collection of wines. I immediately went home and opened the LaFayette to enjoy with a dark cherry and chili pepper chocolate which was also showered upon us.  (Sometimes when I think my job can’t get any better, it does!)

Thanks for a wonderful afternoon Skipper and Cooper!

More Snow….

Well, it seems “the lady doth protest too much, methinks,” aptly fits my current state given my prior post.  I complained, you see, about having to run on the treadmill due to our constant pummeling of snow this winter.

So, the God of Nature showed me – she dumped 30 inches of the white stuff upon me and now, alas, even the gym is closed.  I believe I’ll stop complaining.

I ventured out this morning but conditions were so nasty and the snow so deep, I didn’t stay out long.  Here are a few from inside my snow globe.

After shoveling all day, my husband made a tiny dent in our driveway. Niles and Lily were grateful.

Snow

It’s been an unusual winter for us here in northern Virginia.  This is my fourth winter here.  And though it’s only the start of February, we have had more snowfall since December than in my past three winters combined.

I’m not much of a winter person. I like warmth. The older I get the more my joints really appreciate those balmy temperatures! Plus, I’m a runner. I’m a runner who prefers running outdoors to a treadmill – a  million times over.  This snow cramps my style.

That said, there is sometimes such beauty in this white stuff.  It is so breathtaking at times that even I, hater of cold, am lured out into its wonder.  With my camera of course…

So, though it’s only the start of February and the luscious warmth of spring seems so very far away, I’ll stop for a moment and enjoy the beauty of winter.
