Lily & Emmy: Two “Minis” Tackle the Big Farm!

We had our session with these two delightful pups on Sunday.  It was hot and humid and they had scheduled a combined session to include studio work as well as a farm session.

I’m always concerned as to whether our subjects will have the energy for such a big session.  I needn’t have worried!

These two diminutive dogs brought their very large personalities as well as their energy!

Emmy was particularly happy to bounce around in the studio…

After a short break we headed outdoors for a farm session.  These two are such funny and loving dogs.  Michelle rescued both dogs, age 4, and she and her newlywed husband Steve, gave them their forever home.

We are always especially gratified when we see rescue dogs who have been tossed aside end up in homes where they are so valued as family members that they merit their own photo session!

These dogs were beyond sweet and seemed to really enjoy their day.  Though Lily was less exuberant than Emmy, she started sneaking into shots when she felt she had been ignored too long..

It was a terrific afternoon and we enjoyed meeting Michelle, Steve and their wonderful “fur family.”

Georgia, Daisy & Chopper Return to the Farm with a twist!

We first shot this trio exactly a year ago. You can see the blog post from that shoot here. It was a beautiful spring day last year and we’ve determined that this group just brings us great weather.

Yesterday they returned with their newest addition to the family – Butters!  A frolicking young man who joined this playful family when personal issues made it impossible for him to stay in his original home.

Spring is making it’s debut at Tranquility Farm. And while the leaves are still spotty, and shade scarce,  it is always a delight to walk this property surrounded by dogs!

This was truly Butters’ shoot.  However, the entire family tagged along in hopes of getting a family shot that includes this new addition.  This is quite the cast of characters and each contributed to the fun, and hilarity of this session.

So, here are the players -

Butters: The star and guest of honor!

Georgia: the spirited senior.  I  had concerns at the start that she could stay with us as we walked the farm for 3 hours.  My fears were unfounded. I actually think she had more energy at the end than the younger dogs!

She is just a delightful and personable hound.

Daisy: Teeny, tiny Daisy. Though the grasses are just starting to grow, in many spots they were already taller than her.  But it doesn’t affect Daisy as she gets carried around by her humans during our sessions. Because – though dainty and feminine, she seems to have a fondness for “things left behind by other animals…”

Chopper: A big, happy, energetic (and strong!) young boy!  Chopper loves his human, Mike and his ball. And he actually has a fondness for Butters but he prefers that no one knows this..

And though these images suggest that this session was a lovely walk in the park – we have video that proves otherwise! I’ll be posting some segments from the shoot later in the week.

After some time in the bottom field (where Butters escaped and found his way to the mud), we moved to the upper field for some play time!

I love this series as it was so fun to watch these dogs interact.  It starts with Choppers, ball in mouth, luring Butters to play..

Choppers has no intention of giving up the ball but Butters tries valiantly to change his mind.  He stands, he hovers… he even tries a “fake” dart away from Choppers..

Butters is convinced that eventually this craziness will get the best of Choppers and he will chase him…

Which, of course, eventually he does.  And in two or three quick steps the cat becomes the mouse and Butters never saw it coming…

Finally, we asked Butters to pose for a few “beauty” shots..

And that family shot we mentioned? Well, though I’ve got a few to show them for their full edit, this was my ultimate favorite..

Thanks for coming back to Tranquility Farm! We had a somewhat raucous afternoon and have some great shots of Butters to bring your family wall up to date!

Myles: Pint-Sized Yorkie

We met Myles and his human Dawn at the farm last week on a blustery winter day for a barn session.

I loved Myles and Dawn before I’d even met them.  But I was also a bit concerned.  We have each client fill out a questionnaire prior to their session.  It asks questions about their pet as well as  overall goals for their session.

Upon reading Dawn’s answers, I LOVED that she described Myles as “A young Paul Newman,” and told us his nickname was “Cowboy” because of his bowed front legs.  On the other hand, I became concerned when she said how terrifically afraid of the camera Myles was.. and fearful of new places… and slow to warm to people….

It was obvious that we had our work cut out for us.

Myles couldn’t have surprised us more.  This sprite of a dog, all five pounds of him, marched into the barn and promptly made himself at home.  He darted about, came when called, and played for a fleeting moment with a sock. He sat on a chair for as long as we asked him to.

He acted nothing like his 8 1/2 years and was beyond thrilled when we deviated from his very strict diet and plied him with the teeniest of tasty treats.  To say that Myles is a personality is an understatement.

Thanks to Myles and Dawn for brightening an otherwise grey and dreary winter day. It was our pleasure.

I love that by the end of the session Myles seemed to actually be looking for the camera. This shot during a lighting check cracked me up.

Frieda & Stoney – Another Holiday Surprise!

We met Frieda & Stoney this week for a secret santa session.  Stoney is a Yorkie. A very tall, 20 lb Yorkie, with papers to prove it.  Don’t tell Stoney he’s a bit large for the breed. He will have none of it. He is a very animated and funny dog and doesn’t seem to be or act 9 1/2.

Frieda is a gorgeous hound mix.  Found by a co-worker on the side of the road as a teeny puppy, Frieda’s human Paulette was asked if she might find Frieda a home. She did.  And six years later Frieda is still at Paulette’s.

You never know how dogs are going to be during a photo session.  The key, I think, is to let things work themselves out.  While we always direct a session to optimize lighting and composition, we also always let the animals show us what makes them comfortable.  For instance, Stoney was happy to perch on any piece of furniture.  Frieda however, preferred the floor. And so it was.

We had such a nice time meeting these two and know their other human will be thrilled to receive such a thoughtful holiday gift.

Flying Miss Daisy!

We were contacted by the human daughter of Miss Daisy’s mom to see if we might be able to help out with a surprise birthday gift.  Miss Daisy’s mom, Jeanette, was flying in from Sacramento to spend her birthday here with her daughter. Of course her four-legged daughter was coming too!

Originally booked as an outside farm session, we were happy to have the barn studio as a back-up since the skies opened up about the time Miss Daisy was scheduled for her session.

I wish you could of seen the look on our faces as Miss Daisy and her entourage arrived.  As they approached the barn I saw what appeared to be a rolling dog carrier.  I assumed Miss Daisy was snug inside.  I was wrong.  Miss Daisy was in the arms of her human. The rolling item was a suitcase with Miss Daisy’s clothes!!

And so began a session of fun and laughter.  Snug in her Louis Vuitton collar, Miss Daisy went from raincoat, to cheerleader, to ballerina.  Towards the end of her session we asked if we might snap a few of her “naked.” While her mom acquiesced she did gasp when I showed her a shot and said, “Oh my, she looks like a …… dog!”

Thanks for brightening our rainy day Miss Daisy. Have a safe flight back to California!
